In the season opener this past Saturday, February 18, the Iona College Gaels took on the University of Connecticut Huskies. The Huskies ended up on top, leading the Gaels 10-7.
Junior Attacker, Kylie Gregory led the Gaels with 5 points for the afternoon (2 goals, 3 assists). Other contributors included Senior Midfielder Casey Scully (two goals, 1 assist), Sophomore Midfielder Nina Veneziale (2 goals), Freshman Midfielder Meghan Testoni (1 goal), Junior Attacker Brittney Mabus ( 1 assist) and Sophomore Attacker Brenna Lade (1 assist). Starting in goal was Freshman Blaire Nathanson, having six saves (three for each half).
The Gaels started off slow in the first half, trailing early and down by four at the half (6-2). In the second half, the Gaels picked up their momentum. By the game's end, the Gaels ended up outshooting the huskies 26-23 and beating them on ground-balls 10-5.
Despite the Huskies' win, Head Coach Michelle Mason, couldn't have been more proud. "You know, it's just our first game. We had to get some jitters out and when we did, we looked awesome. in the second half, we beat UConn and now we just have to work on coming out strong in the first half."
The Gaels will take on Sacred Heart this Wednesday, February 22 at 3 p.m. on Mazzella Field for a Northeast Conference game.
