Home and Five-Overtimes Later...

On February 22 at 3:30 p.m. on Mazzella field, the Iona Women's Lacrosse team took on the Sacred Heart Pioneers in a game for the history books. In a surprising 5OT game, the gaels took the win 11-10.
Senior captain and midfielder, Casey Scully scored with 2:04 left in the 5th overtime.
Scully led Iona with three goals while junior attacker Brittney Mabus and sophomore attacker Brenna Lade tied each other with three points a piece (1 goal, 2 assists). Sophomore midfielder Nina Veneziale scored twice. Freshman midfielder Meghan Testoni had a goal and an assist. Senior attacker Emily Taddei scored twice after having to of her goals taken away.
Iona took the lead early on 3-0, utilizing the free position to score two of their three goals. Sacred Heart came back with four goals before junior attacker Kylie Gregory tied the game with 1:33 remaining in the first half. The pioneers didn't like that and scored once more, leading 5-4 at the half.
To open the second half, Testoni got another free position goal to tie the game at 5-5. Sacred Heart soon got a two goal lead to push them once into the lead. Iona countered with three goals to take the reigns but Sacred Heart scored with 4:20 remaining in the half.
In the first overtime, Scully scored with just three seconds left but because the first overtime isn't sudden death, Sacred Heart countered with another goal to once again tie up the game. The gaels pretty much held the ball from that point on and on a beautiful feed from Mabus, Scully found the back of the net with 2:04 left in sudden death. "I just didn't see us losing," said Freshman defender Bernadette Gennaro.
Junior goalie, Nancy Ibrahim made seven saves in her first debut for the Gaels.
Iona will once again be home on Mazzella Field Saturday, February 25, to take on the LaSalle Explorers.
